Introduction
ASCPM offers Botox® (onabotulinumtoxinA) as a proven treatment option for patients living with chronic migraine.
Chronic migraine is defined as headache occurring on 15 or more days per month, with migraine features on at least 8 of those days.
For appropriate candidates, Botox can help reduce how often migraines occur and how severe they feel, improving day-to-day function and quality of life.
How It Works
Botox is a purified protein that is injected in small amounts into specific muscles and nerve-rich areas of the head and neck.
In chronic migraine treatment, Botox is used to calm overactive pain pathways by reducing the release of certain chemical messengers involved in pain signaling.
The goal is prevention: decreasing the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks over time.
Benefits
- Fewer migraine days: Many patients experience a meaningful reduction in the number of headache days per month.
- Less severe symptoms: Migraines that do occur may be shorter, less intense, and easier to manage.
- Improved daily function: Reduced migraine burden can lead to better sleep, productivity, and overall quality of life.
- Well-tolerated, non-opioid option: Botox is minimally invasive and does not rely on daily medication.
About the Procedure
Treatment begins with a consultation to confirm whether you meet criteria for Botox migraine prevention and to review your headache history, triggers, and prior treatments.
Botox is administered in-office using a very small needle. Injections are placed across multiple areas commonly involved in migraine pain patterns,
typically including parts of the forehead, temples, back of the head, neck, and upper shoulders.
The visit is usually brief, and most patients return to normal activity the same day. Some people notice improvement within 1–2 weeks,
though the full preventive benefit is often clearer after subsequent treatment cycles. Because results are temporary, injections are generally repeated
at regular intervals to maintain benefit, based on your clinician’s plan.
Your ASCPM provider will review what to expect, potential side effects, and how to track your response so the plan can be tailored to your migraine pattern and goals.
